The NFL offseason is filled with anticipation, and this year, the San Francisco 49ers are at the heart of it. The spotlight is on their 23-year-old quarterback, Brock Purdy, who's making steady progress following a UCL surgery in his throwing elbow.
Post-surgery, Purdy is anticipated to make a return to the field by the end of July for the training camp, if all goes according to plan. He's shown encouraging signs of recovery, already practising throwing gestures using a towel and is set to start throwing a football again come June.
Purdy's return is eagerly awaited by the Niners. He's already been announced as the likely starting quarterback for the 2023 NFL season if his recovery remains on track. This speculation has stirred a wave of trade rumors involving Trey Lance during the offseason.
In the previous season, Purdy demonstrated exceptional skill on the field. In just nine games, including five starts, he completed a commendable 67.1% of his passes for 1,374 yards, with 13 touchdowns and only four interceptions. This performance saw him lead the 49ers deep into the postseason. The upcoming season will be his second, and his potential is seen as an appealing upside in the fantasy football realm.
The 49ers' general manager, John Lynch, has also given positive updates on Purdy's recovery from the UCL tear he suffered during the NFC Championship Game. While the recovery is a long journey, Purdy is on track and expected to commence throwing within a few weeks.
However, the exact date of Purdy's return to the field remains uncertain. According to head coach Kyle Shanahan, it might be as late as Week 4 of the season. In the meantime, it's likely that Trey Lance will take the reins until Purdy is back to full health.
