For those of you following along at home, the Trey Lance/Brock Purdy story is a prime example of why the NFL Draft is the biggest casino in the history of sports. In 2021, the 49ers wagered the house and rolled the dice by trading THREE 1st round picks to move up in the draft, pass on Justin Fields, and draft a young man with more talent in his throwing arm than most of us could ever dream of having in our entire body, but almost zero experience at developing that talent and refining it. They lost that bet and just agreed to trade Trey Lance to the Cowboys, of all teams, for a 4th round draft pick. As 49ers GM John Lynch put it, they “took a shot and it didn’t work out.” He also said what a lot of GMs in professional sports won’t say. “We own that,” Lynch said, when asked about the trade during the 49ers week 3 preseason broadcast. However, make no mistake about it, the only reason John Lynch was still able to make that statement as an employee of the San Francisco 49ers is the fact that at that very same casino a year later, he hit big on his way out the door with the very last pick in the 2022 draft and acquired Brock Purdy. So far, Purdy has saved John Lynch and Head Coach Kyle Shanahan from facing the same scrutiny and fate as many GM/Head Coach tandems before them have for whiffing so badly on a trade AND draft pick. The question in 2023 and beyond will be, is Purdy fools’ gold? Or did Lynch and the 49ers hit the jackpot on a free spin after losing their asses at the tables? #icouldbewrong but if the 49ers win a Super Bowl with Brock Purdy as their starter, the name Trey Lance will never be mentioned in San Francisco again.
