When the Raiders announced on Wednesday that Derek Carr would not play the last 2 games of the season and also step away from the team, the immediate assumption by most is that Carr has played his last game in the Silver and Black. The Raiders have until February 15th to make a decision on whether to keep their long-time signal caller and face of the franchise as their starter for 2023 or let him go and save nearly $30 million in salary cap space next year. A third option could be to keep him and attempt to make a trade with a team looking for a veteran quarterback this off-season. Carr has shown the ability at various times to be a very good quarterback over his career. He has also shown that he is a great locker room leader. What he hasn't shown is the consistency that is needed to be considered an elite quarterback. The Raiders made an all-in move to go get Davante Adams and paid him a lot of money. While Adams' numbers suggest they have had a good year together, if you've watched any Raiders' games this year then you know that they just weren't quite all the way in sync for most of the season. The Raiders have also struggled mightily to maintain double digit leads this year as well. Is that all on Derek Carr? Absolutely not. However, someone has to be the fall guy and since the coach is in the first year of his contract and the quarterback is in the last year of guaranteed money of his contract the decision is an easy one for the Raiders. I could be wrong but, I think Derek Carr will be released the day after the Super Bowl. I also think that he will sign with either the Washington Commanders or the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the off-season.
